On Wednesday 8/31 the Coalition alongside DWAC members supported our partners at the Sidewalk Project in commemorating Overdose Awareness Day. The Sidewalk Project along with their partners commemorated the event by holding a rally at city hall. Organizations uplifted Governor Newsom’s recent vetoing of SB 57, a bill that would have allowed three CA cities to pilot Overdose Prevention Programs (LA, Oakland, SF).
On Friday (9/2) LA CAN held its regular Resident Organizing Committee (ROC) meeting. This week we watched Wattstax, a 1973 film documenting the Wattstax benefit concert organized by Stax records at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1972. The concert celebrated the 7 year anniversary of the 1965 Watts Uprisings. The movie was screened in LA CAN’s freedom room, providing attendees respite from the current heat wave here in Los Angeles. Refreshments included popcorn and soda!
