Weekly Update – October 7, 2022

Greetings friends! Here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday 10/4, we held our monthly Gender and Sexuality meeting. We were joined by the powerful women leading the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition (DWAC) at Los Angeles Community Action Network. Monique, Tosha, Meka, and Keke led is in a conversation introducing the work that DWAC does in Skid Row. We also talked about how families, especially Black mothers, are policed by different state agencies. Focusing specifically on the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS), we discussed how nurturing Black mothers are criminalized and Black children traumatized by teachers, social workers, and institutions for not adhering to acceptable white supremacist models of parenting or culture. We revisited the Coalition’s October 2020 report on the Department of Child and Family Services, highlighting the information sharing environment within this seemingly benign agency. We also shared some details about our upcoming report on DCFS in collaboration with DWAC.

On Friday 10/7 we supported LA CAN’s Resident Organizing Committee (ROC) meeting. Pete invited guests to share what they offer to the world, and folks discussed what gifts they bring. We were joined by Trinidad Ruiz who shared a few words about Indigenous Peoples Day. General Dogon then shared some commonalities between Black and Indigenous histories. Attendees meditated on how our oppressors thrive off highlighting our division. We then envisioned what kind of future intersectional solidarity could bring.
