Request for release of details re. LAPD’s Community Outreach for Drone Usage

Dear Commission President Soboroff:

On Monday September 15 2014, the Los Angeles Police Commission released a media advisory stating, “Office of Inspector General to house two Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) while Policy is Reviewed.”  The advisory further stated, “LAPD has begun their community outreach and process for drafting of policies and protocols for consideration by the Commission.”

On behalf of the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and the Drone-Free LAPD/No Drones, LA! campaign we request that your office instruct the Los Angeles Police Department to release, with immediate effect, details of past and future scheduled meetings that LAPD has already held and will be holding in the community or any other group regarding LAPD’s “process for drafting policies and protocols for consideration by the Commission” on the use of Drones or UAVs.  Please include day, date, time, location and additional details that clearly indicate the purpose and scope of these meetings including the agenda, community partners present, and documentation and material used during these events.

Attached is a letter further detailing our purpose and concerns. Given the urgency and heightened interest amongst Angelenos on this critical matter, we look forward to hearing back from your office and the LAPD in a timely manner.  We would appreciate a detailed response no later than Friday December 5, 2014. Should you have further questions, please feel free to contact us by email.

Sincerely,
Hamid Khan
