Human Relations Commission Update
This week, we learned from the Los Angeles City Human Relations Commission (HRC) indeed they can hold actual public hearings on Suspicious Activity Reporting, gang injunctions, and public safety issues. However, the City Attorney’s office made it clear that the HRC has no power to issue subpoenas.
Occupy: Dismantled, Derailed, Neutralized – Fusion Center Reports
Last week’s New York Times Story detailing federal and local government surveillance of the Occupy Movement in 2011 and 2012 shows the deep surveillance, spying and infiltration of the occupy movement. Obtained through the Freedom of Information Act Request by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, the 4000 pages of unclassified emails and reports reveal communications detailing officials keeping track of events, political disagreements, profiling, and developing reports on the Occupy Movement and how to deal with protesters. This is the latest in a long history of government’s assault on social justice movements.
On Tuesday, June 17th at the coalition general meeting starting at 6:30pm, we will be devoting special time to discuss these developments, share information, and discuss ways to make our organizations stronger and strategize on how to confront and dismantle the ever-growing surveillance state. Pass the Word!!
