WEEKLY UPDATE – JUNE 30, 2023

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (6/27), the Coalition held our monthly Data Driven Policing webinar. We discussed Pride and the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, and connected our fights and work. Additionally, we addressed LAPD’s central community policing program, Community Safety Partnerships (CSP), and the program’s expansion despite CSP residents’ demands to defund it. Furthermore, we delved deeper into LAPD’s Architecture of Surveillance, examining its presence on CSP sites, and shared our recent PRA work on mapping surveillance at Echo Park Lake and other areas.

We continued our conversation on CSP sites and community policing as counterinsurgency during Thursday’s (6/29) episode of Radio Insurrection. Hamid led a round table discussion with our very own Tiff Guerra and Amira Jarmakani on the work the Coalition’s community policing work group has been doing to uncover LAPD’s counterinsurgency efforts in our communities. You can listen to the episode on kpfk.org/archives.

On Friday (6/30) the Coalition reignited our monthly MOVIE NIGHT series at LAPD HQ. The Coalition held space in front of LAPD HQ to discuss LAPD’s increasing surveillance arsenal and the growing effort to increase community policing. Attendees shared thoughts, music, and shared food. Once the sun set we projected a film for attendees to watch.
