Weekly Update – January 20, 2023

Greetings friends! Here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (1/17) the Coalition held its monthly general meeting, in-person at our home in LA CAN. During the meeting, we mapped out the many fights we’re undertaking, briefly reviewing the progress we’ve made and talked about next steps we want to take in these fights. Additionally, we asked attendees to log on to a special Board of Police Commissioners meeting to provide public comment on the decision to reappoint Chief Michel Moore.

On Wednesday (1/18) the War on Youth workgroup was back at STEM to the Future for our residency with 4th through 6th graders. This week students discussed their individual and collective strengths and created really cool personal pokémon cards highlighting their powers.

On Thursday (1/19) Pete White served as Guest Host of Radio Insurrection on KPFK. We had an impressive slate of guests discussing the history of municipal code 41.18. In addition to UCLA Law Professor Gary Blaise, we also had Mark Vestal of Million Dollar Hoods, Monique Noel and Natosha Smith of Downtown Women’s Action Coalition, Joanna Swan of Streetwatch LA, and General Dogon of LA CAN.

That evening, Todd Cunningham of LA CAN’s Food and Wellness Committee organized the pick up of 180 pizzas from LA Convention Center. Pizza Hut constructed the largest pizza in the world in the Los Angeles Convention Center and donated the resulting cuts of pizza to local food banks. Here’s a picture of Todd with the cheesy monstrosity:
