Weekly Update – February 3, 2023

Greetings friends! Here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (1/31) The Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and our partners with LAPC Fails tuned into the weekly Board of Police Commissioners to provide public comment against the reappointment of Chief Michel Moore. Despite near unanimous opposition to his reappointment the Board voted unanimously to reappoint Moore as Chief. This decision was reaffirmed by Mayor Karen Bass in a later statement.

On Wednesday (2/1) the War on Youth work group continued our residency with STEM to the Future. This week students participated in an activity replicating the national budgeting process. They also constructed a word map around the issue of policing. Here’s a picture of the word map:

On Thursday (2/2), Radio Insurrection on KPFK featured a remarkable roundtable with special guests Jamie Garcia and Shakeer Rahman alongside show regulars Hamid Khan and Matyos Kidane, discussing specialized police units like the “SCORPION” unit in Memphis, TN. The SCORPION unit recently gained national attention for their brutal killing of Tyre Nichols. We discussed similar specialized units here in Los Angeles, and how they’re used to terrorize poor communities under the guise of executing data driven policing programs.

On Friday, the Coalition supported our comrades from the Palestinian Youth Movement in an action at the zionist consulate. Protesters we’re commemorating the recent massacre of refugees at Jenin. You can view our statement in support here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CoOQyVrJdES/
