Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:
On Saturday 4/20:
The Coalition’s War on Youth and Public Health Surveillance Working Group presented our work to a group of visiting high school students from LAUSD. The visit was coordinated by our partners at Changeist. Dr. Bita Amani and Jamie Garcia led the students in a presentation highlighting how the racist intentions and foundations of public health systems in the United States manifest themselves today. The pair also discussed how public health models in post-revolutionary Cuba differ.
On Sunday 4/21:
The All People’s Health Collective convened for an all day retreat to continue planning the ongoing fight against Care Courts.
That evening LA CAN organized an overnight encampment at the steps of the Federal Building to protest the Supreme Courts hearing on the Grant’s Pass case. This case may make it constitutional to criminalize unhoused people in the United States.
On Tuesday 4/23:
The Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting to present a letter highlighting the boards pattern of censoring voices critical of policing during the public comment period.
That evening we held our monthly Data Driven Policing meeting where attendees collectively crafted PRA’s to uncover details about LAPD’s Project Blue Light.
On Wednesday 4/24:
The Coalition presented our work to groups of students from the University of Washington and UCLA.
On Thursday 4/25:
Radio Insurrection featured organizers from the upcoming May Day march, who discussed the importance of International Worker’s Day in the context of the current raging Zionist genocide in Gaza. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.
On Thursday 4/25 and Friday 4/26:
The Coalition’s own Hamid Khan and Akhil Gopal supported student led actions at both USC and UCLA.
