Community Townhall Recording Here – Tuesday May 17th at 6PM
Join us for an interactive Community Townhall on the monitoring and infiltration of social media by Law Enforcement. The in-person townhall will take place on Tuesday May 17th at 6PM at the Robinson Space in Historic Filipinotown located at 104 Robinson St., Los Angeles, CA 90026. Light dinner will be served.
Developed by the US Military in the 1970’s, Social Network Analysis is a powerful process deployed by the LAPD using the vast repository of peoples’ social media that is collected constantly through field interview cards or creating fake accounts, monitoring social media of hundreds of thousands of Angelenos or specifically targeting peoples’ political activities. LAPD uses several technologies including GeoFeedia, Dataminr, Voyager, Media Sonar to listen, monitor, trace, track, scrape, and stalk communities claiming, “situational awareness” and “investigations.”
The townhall will include presentation by Rachel Levinson-Waldman with Brennan Center for Justice at New York University. The center analyzed over 10,000 documents they received from the LAPD through Public Records request. We will also be joined by Sam Levin, journalist with the Guardian Newspaper who has been covering this issue extensively.
The townhall is a Call to Action. Knowing, strategizing, and mapping our fight to dismantle these harmful programs that are designed to contain, control, and criminalize our communities.
