Dear friends, check out some of the work we have been doing!
Tuesday’s (4/12) monthly War on Youth Webinar provided newcomers to the fight with a recap of the LAPD’s Providing Alternatives to Hinder Extremism (PATHE) program, and its recent funding through the DHS Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) grant. Maraky reviewed the journey the grant has taken from the DHS announcement last fall to the City Council vote approving the LAPD’s usage of these funds. We discussed some of our upcoming efforts to organize educators against PATHE, including an educator’s pledge introduced by Nadia. We addressed the academic complicity involved in bolstering these Counter Extremism efforts by exploring a recently acquired set of public records requests containing communications between David Eisenman, Stevan Weine, and various global coordinators of CVE programs. Lastly, Celine covered how non-profit organizations partner with law enforcement to facilitate and implement CVE programs. Celine also took attendees through a recently leaked ADL memo exposing their obfuscation of the police and Israeli military partnerships in response to mass criticism. On Wednesday (4/13) the Coalition conducted outreach with our ferocious comrade, General Dogon. We spent the morning talking to community members in Skid Row about police surveillance. Needless to say, the Covid pandemic has slowed down our efforts to make time with impacted community members, but as cases dwindle the Coalition will be ramping up our outreach efforts.
Later that evening the Coalition held our monthly coordinating team meeting. The team planned the Coalition’s next steps regarding outreach and discussed different opportunities to bring the Coalition’s work into new spaces. In addition to our usual updates, we also enjoyed a presentation from Bocoup, the firm that has been working tirelessly to improve our website. Bocoup is looking for 5 individuals to conduct a one on one usability study with a Bocoup staff member. Individuals will be compensated with a $100 Visa card for 50 minutes of their time. To apply to be a participant fill out this form.
