WEEKLY UPDATE – Sep 8, 2023

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (9/5) we held our monthly webinar on the policing of Gender and Sexuality. The working group discussed our upcoming projects including: continuing our outreach around the racist surveillance and policing perpetuated by the Department of Child and Family Services, examining LAPD arrest data of sex workers following the Super Bowl, and creating popular education materials from the group’s research. You can read our report on the DCFS at stoplapdspying.org/dcfs.

We discussed LAPD’s history of violence targeted at sex workers, especially around large scale events like the super bowl. Pictured above is a pin LAPD officers wore during the 1984 olympics that reads “whore busters”.

On Thursday’s (9/7) episode of Radio Insurrection, we had a round table discussion on the 61 RICO indictments levied against activists opposing the Cop City development in Atlanta. We discussed the implications of these indictments to organizing around the country and especially here in Los Angeles. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

That evening we released our zine, Understanding LASAR, on LAUSD’s new youth surveillance app. The zine was created in collaboration with Fairfax High School’s Peace and Social Justice Club. You can download the zine at stoplapdspying.org/lasar.
