Weekly Update – May 19, 2023 –

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

On Sunday (5/14) we released DCF(S) STANDS FOR DIVIDING AND CONQUERING FAMILIES: HOW THE FAMILY POLICING SYSTEM CONTRIBUTES TO THE STALKER STATE, our new report researched and written in partnership with the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition (DWAC). The report was produced through focus groups, community conversations, and community-based research with mothers and families in Skid Row who have been harmed over the years by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

You can download the report and learn more about it here: https://stoplapdspying.org/dcfs/

On Monday (5/15), our very own Hamid Khan sat on a panel at the Los Angeles Poverty Department discussing Malcolm Harris’ new book, Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World. Also on the panel were speakers from the Los Angeles Tenants Union.

During Tuesday’s (5/16) general meeting Shakeer led participants in a discussion around our Watch the Watchers website and our zine specifically focusing on LAPD’s Central Division. Shakeer led a discussion on how community members can replicate this zine with other LAPD divisions using the Watch the Watchers website.

On Wednesday (5/17) the War on Youth work group continued our residency working with youth at Stem to the Future. The Youth continued to develop their final project, organizing a direct action at the LAUSD building. The action is scheduled for Tuesday 6/6, more details to come.

On Thursday’s (5/18) episode of Radio Insurrection, Hamid Khan led a powerful conversation with Shakeel Syed and Zainab Syeda Qureshi of South Asian Network. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.
