WEEKLY UPDATE – May 24, 2024

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Saturday 5/18:

The Coalition supported LA CAN’s teach in on 41.18 at City Hall. Our very own Akhil Gopal spoke about the connections between LAPD and the Zionist state.

On Monday 5/20:

The Coalition led a teach in on Palestine in partnership with the Brother Sons Selves Coalition. The teach in was held at Youth Justice Coalition’s Chuco’s Center.

On Tuesday 5/21:

The Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting where, after five years, the office of the inspector general finally submitted an audit of the Suspicious Activity Reporting Program. The Coalition spoke out against the continued legitimization of SAR and behavioral surveillance.

That evening the Coalition held our monthly general meeting where we discussed the content of the audit and the ways behavioral surveillance has shown up in other LAPD programs.

On Thursday 5/23:

This week’s episode of Radio Insurrection featured a conversation with Dr. Nicholas Shapiro, assistant professor at UCLA and head of the Carceral Ecologies Lab. Shapiro discussed the lab’s work in collaboration with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.
