Weekly Update – March 31, 2023

Greetings Friends! Here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (3/28), the Coalition held a hybrid Data Driven Policing Monthly Meeting. The topic of discussion was LAPD’s acquisition of a military quadruped unmanned robot, commonly referred to as a robot dog. We discussed some of the lies and myths disseminated by LAPD in their attempts to convince City Council to approve their acquisition of this dog. We discussed how LAPD’s usage of other military surveillance equipment like drones, has expanded. With especially focus on how their “restrictive” policies have in fact changed to allow them to use this technology more freely.

On Wednesday (3/29), the War on Youth work group continued our residency with students at Stem to the Future. This week, students began planning their final project, a direct action organized by students. Students planned where and when their action would place, and crafted slogans and chants to share with community members. Students also worked on a flyer to conduct outreachStudents are also preparing to showcase their work at UCLA Law’s CALL TO ACTION Festival on April 15th. More details to come.

On Thursday (3/30), Radio Insurrection featured a remarkable local community organizer, Kei, from the Save Weelaunee Coalition. Hamid and Kei had a substantial conversation about the generations long effort to preserve and protect the Weelaunee forest. Kei highlighted how youth have been at the vanguard of the fight against the development of Cop City. You can listen to the show online at kpfk.org/archive .
