WEEKLY UPDATE – MARCH 29, 2024

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

This week the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition hosted our third cohort of high school interns from the Peace and Social Justice Club. This year in addition to students from Fairfax High School, we were joined by Peace and Social Justice Club members from San Pedro High School. The students focused their research on Police Academy Magnet programs in LAUSD schools. The students created a zine that will be published soon.

Not pictured above are our valued interns: Nora, Zury, and Amanda!

On Tuesday 3/26:

On Tuesday morning the Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting.

That evening the Coalition held our monthly Data Driven Policing meeting. This month attendees discussed LAPD’s partnership with surveillance software company Peregrine and the upcoming LAPD budget proposal.

On Thursday 3/28:

This week’s episode of Radio Insurrection featured a follow up conversation with Nika Soon-Shiong, lead researcher on the campaign to end Accenture’s contract with Los Angeles County. During the second half of the show we were in conversation with Akhil Gopal about LAUSD’s LASAR (Los Angeles Schools Anonymous Reporting) App. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

On Friday 3/29:

We held our monthly movie night outside of LAPD HQ. This month we exhibited Infiltrators, a 2012 documentary that follows Palestinians as they navigate and overcome the multiple boundaries, checkpoints, and barriers erected by the Zionist settler-colonial apartheid state.
