WEEKLY UPDATE – March 1, 2024

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Saturday 2/24:

The Coalition joined our partners from Tiny Tech Zines to table at The Good Gays Marketplace. The Coalition shared our popular education materials with community members and discussed different facets of our work.

On Tuesday 2/27:

The Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting where we commented on how LAPD’s Records Management System gathers and manipulates data to facilitate the criminalization of Black and brown communities.

That evening we held our monthly Data Driven Policing meeting where we discussed LAPD’s proposal to acquire Real Time Crime Centers across various police stations. We talked about how the myth of Smart Cities are being used to justify the expansion of these surveillance capabilities.

On Wednesday 2/28:

The Coalition supported LA CAN’s action demanding the city produce a community impact report on 41.18. The City’s report was 261 days overdue during Wednesday’s meeting.

On Thursday 2/29:

During Thursday’s episode of Radio Insurrection we discussed the Deadly Exchange between municipal law enforcement agencies and the IDF with our very own Akhil Gopal. We also discussed how Public Health models are increasingly being used to facilitate the criminalization of communities with Zofia Trexler. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

On Friday 3/1:

The Coalition held a teach in on the Deadly Exchange between local law enforcement agencies and the IDF at Occidental College. The Coalition also shared how Zionist nonprofits are bolstering youth surveillance programs in Los Angeles.
