Weekly Update – February 17, 2023

Greetings, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (2/14), the Coalition held our monthly War on Youth Webinar. The War on Youth work group was thrilled to welcome so many new faces to out webinar. We kicked off the meeting with a review of our fight thus far, including our victory against the CVE program in 2018 and our recent efforts in fighting back against the LAPD PATHE program. We shared some of the public records we’ve uncovered relating to LAPD’s youth surveillance program, PATHE, and even briefly modeled our collective research model by allowing attendees to access and review the public records. The community policing team joined us for the latter half of our meeting to discuss the GRYD (Gang Reduction Youth Development) program and their risk assessment model.

On Wednesday (2/15), our War on Youth Work Group continued our residency with 4th through 6th graders at Stem to the Future. This week our students participated in an exercise helping them understand the difference between the intended effect of our actions, and their impact. They also constructed a word map around the topic of violence.

On Thursday (2/16), this week’s episode of Radio Insurrection featured a conversation on Black History month with a focus on the Black immigrant experience. The show featured labor organizer Eleni Johnson and Stop LAPD Spying community organizer, Matyos Kidane. You can listen to the show at kpfk.org/archives .

Later that day, the War on Youth Work group had our monthly research meeting. The group reviewed the public records we’ve attained in our efforts to better understand the LAPD PATHE program. We also brainstormed new records requests to draft for the future.
