WEEKLY UPDATE – DEC 8, 2023

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday 12/5:

The Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting where the board was discussing expanding LAPD’s arsenal of automated license plate readers and other surveillance capabilities in response to fictional narratives detailing organized retail theft. The Board approved $15.6M to increase LAPD’s surveillance arsenal to address organized retail theft.

That evening we held our monthly Gender and Sexuality meeting in-person at LA CAN. This month we were joined by Sidewalk Project as we continued to discuss strategies to fight back against the City Attorney’s multi-agency attack on sex workers at the Figueroa Corridor. We were joined by attorney John Raphling to discuss best practices when detained by police.

On Thursday 12/7:

On Thursday’s episode of Radio Insurrection we were joined by our very own Nadia Khan and Union del Barrio’s Ron Gochez to discuss the critical significance of educators within the liberation movement, and the ongoing criminalization of students and educators teaching Ethnic Studies or displaying dissent against the state. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

On Friday 12/8:

The Coalition supported our dear friends at the Palestinian Youth Movement as they led a protest in Beverly Hills, condemning President Joe Biden for attending a fundraising dinner in our city while he funds and supports the genocide of Palestinians.
