WEEKLY UPDATE – DEC 1, 2023

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday 11/30:

The Coalition attended the Public Safety Committee meeting at City Hall along with the Palestinian Youth Movement to speak out against a motion introduced by Nithya Raman and Bob Blumenfield that would criminalize the dissemination of pro-Palestinian flyers as mass littering of hate speech. This motion is a clear effort to target communities supporting Palestinian resistance and is in line with a practice of conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism. The motion was passed unanimously and will be heard at the Los Angeles Civil and Human Rights Board before going to the full council.

That evening the Coalition held our monthly Data Driven Policing working group meeting, working group members from the Architecture of Surveillance unveiled a new interface to explore LAPD’s architecture of surveillance. Community members also discussed the upcoming LAPD budget.

On Wednesday 12/1:

Our very own Hamid Khan welcomed a class of UCLA students to LA CAN to discuss the Coalition’s work.

On Thursday 12/2:

This week on Radio Insurrection we honored and remembered our dear beloved friend and comrade Gustavo Otzoy. Gustavo was a ferocious freedom fighter and part of the LA CAN family. We were joined by General Dogon and Joanna who remembered the many contributions Gustavo brought to our movement. We also discussed the states role in facilitating the deaths of unhoused community members across Los Angeles. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.
