WEEKLY UPDATE – AUG 4, 2023

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (8/1) our Fairfax High Peace and Social Justice Club interns visited Ecohoods, LA CAN’s farm and community space located in South Central Los Angeles. There students learned about how policing practices like Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design have shaped neighborhoods in South Central, by depriving our communities of trees, homes, and healthy food. LA CAN’s own Monique discussed the intention behind the Ecohoods project and the abolitionist future it represents for our communities.

That evening we held our monthly Gender and Sexuality meeting. The work group introduced new comers to our work, especially our recently released report on the Department of Child and Family Services, created in collaboration with the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition (DWAC), and principally authored by Victoria Copeland. We also discussed upcoming projects the work group plans on tackling.

On Thursday (8/3) morning, Radio Insurrection aired a special show on the significance of Black August. We were joined by an incredible set of guests, Organizer and Professor Deshonay Dozier, Youth Justice Coalition Co-Executive Director Jade Green, and Africa Town Coalition’s Lead Organizer Billion Godsun. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

That evening we held our monthly War on Youth work group meeting. Participants discussed pending and new public records requests, and brainstormed some pop-ed tools the work group could develop in the upcoming weeks.

On Friday (8/4), Hamid Khan participated in a Q&A following a screening of the 2022 documentary Riotsville, USA at the Skid Row Archive and Museum, hosted by the Los Angeles Poverty Department. The film recounts the construction and utilization of an imitation city meant to be a training ground for military and police forces to squash protests.
