WEEKLY UPDATE – AUG 18, 2023

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

Last Sunday (8/13) the Coalition’s Community Policing work group continued our regular outreach at Nickerson Garden’s, an LAPD Community Safety Partnership site. We continued to learn more about LAPD’s surveillance practices at Nickerson Gardens from community memebers.

On Monday (8/14) the Coalition held our monthly Data Driven Policing working group meeting. Members provided updates on the current state of the many fights that make up our campaign against Data Driven Policing. We also discussed upcoming popular education materials based on public records we have received.

On Tuesday (8/15) we held our monthly general meeting. This month we revisited the LAPD SAR and iWATCH programs. After providing background information we discussed how these programs impact current surveillance practices.

Thursday’s (8/17) episode of Radio Insurrection featured a conversation with our very own Akhil Gopal alongside Vanessa Ramos and Zofia Trexler of Disability Rights California. The group discussed LAUSD’s anonymous reporting app targeting LAUSD students. LASAR, short for Los Angeles Schools Anonymous Reporting, is an app available to students, teachers, and any community member meant to report LAUSD students for suspicious behaviors. The group discussed the racist history of this app, and the threat it poses for our young people.

You can listen to a recording of the show at kpfk.org/archives.
