WEEKLY UPDATE – AUG 11, 2023

Greetings friends, check out what we’ve been up to:

On Tuesday (8/8) the Coalition held our monthly War on Youth webinar. This month we commemorated Black August by discussing the history of Black Youth Organizing in Los Angeles, and the history of Black youth surveillance by LAPD. We also discussed the conclusion of our internship with Fairfax High Schools Students and teased a zine they have been working on. Lastly we shared details about our upcoming Youth Day at the Park.

On Wednesday and Thursday LA CAN hosted a two day convening on combating the CARE act and SB43 two pieces of state legislation that would facilitate the criminalization mental illness and streamline the incarceration of unhoused people. The Coalition will provide updates as this fight grows and continues.

On Thursday (8/10) morning’s episode of Radio Insurrection Hamid Khan was in conversation with Harold Welton, former member of the Black Panther Party and Current member of the Free Ruchell Magee Coalition. Harold discussed the importance of Black August and his upcoming film Jackson More Than a Name.
