WEEKLY UPDATE – April 5, 2024

Greetings dear friends, here’s what we’ve been up to:

On Saturday 3/30:

The War on Youth working group held our second Youth Surveillance Town Hall at the Southern California Library. Parents, teachers, community members, and fellow organizers convened to learn more about LAUSD’s Los Angeles Schools Anonymous Reporting (LASAR) app.

On Tuesday 4/2:

The Coalition attended the Board of Police Commissioners meeting where we spoke out against a donation to the LAPD’s Youth Cadet Program. The Coalition also uplifted the department’s practice of suppressing public record’s requests by community members calling out LAPD violence.

Later that evening the Coalition held our monthly Gender and Sexuality Community Meeting at LA CAN. This month we finalized a set of public records requests aimed at getting more information about the City Attorney’s efforts to target sex workers in the Figueroa Corridor.

On Thursday 4/3:

This week’s episode of Radio Insurrection featured a conversation with LA CAN organizers General Dogon and Adam Smith. The pair discussed LA CAN’s community-led report on the violent impact of Municipal Code 41.18. Entitled ‘Separate and Unequal,’ the report catalyzed turmoil among city leaders by questioning the suppression of the city’s own impact report on 41.18. You can listen to the episode at kpfk.org/archives.

On Friday 4/4:

The Community Policing working group held an all day retreat to strategize about our upcoming organizing efforts.
