This past week, LAUSD students walked out in an incredible demonstration of their power on Monday 4/14. They left school and even conducted a sit-in to make their demands heard. This happened on the eve of UTLA preparing for a historic strike with teachers, administrators, and workers at LAUSD schools. In the end, early in the morning on Tuesday 4/15, UTLA reached an agreement!
On Tuesday later in the morning (9:30am), we attended the Board of Police Commissioners’ meeting, where we made public comment continuing to demand an end to Flock. At the meeting, Teresa Sanchez Gordon was not present, but she stepped down from her position as president, and Rasha Shields took over the presidency, with Daniel Tabor as her vice president.
After the presidential shuffle of a morning, the Coalition held our monthly War on Youth Meeting where we talked the UTLA / LAUSD updates, the Board of Police Comissioners’ meeting, and we did a mapping activity where we mapped flock cameras in our areas, particularly looking at where Flock cameras are in relation to schools and parks near us!
On Friday April 18th, some folks from the coalition flew out to Atlanta, Georgia for a convening on abolition and our fight against Big Tech. On Saturday, 4/19, we will be doing a presentation on our continued fight back against data driven policing, including a timeline of surveillance, and finishing with an activity to map out our fights together using our algorithmic ecology tool!
