This past week, Stop LAPD Coalition held a meeting to begin to formalize our fight against Flock “Safety.” We met with over 60 other coalition partners and community members to talk about what Flock is (an Automatic License Plate Vendor). We talked about why we are fighting Flock — it criminalizes us at a mass scale, from deportation to abortion and racist “crime” narratives, Flock’s mass surveillance impacts us all! And we discussed our fight back, starting with a press conference on Tuesday March 3rd.
The morning of 2/24, we also went to the Board of Police Commissioners and continued to expose LAPD’s relentless acquisition of surveillance weaponry, including a multi million dollar grant from DHS — the Department of Homeland Security.
On Wednesday, we went to LA CAN’s Human and Civil Rights Meeting where we talked about sweeps and our fightback. We also went to Maya Angelou High School’s “Know Your Rights / Fight” workshop with SWAY, the Stop the War Against Youth Club!
On Friday, we held our monthly movie night, where we showed 3 short films about youth uprisings, including high school protests, free childcare programs, and the Ujamii Uhuru Schule Community Freedom School. On saturday 2/28, we held a workshop with Kim Wilson on dismantling anti-Blackness in our organizing, and we continued to learn and unlearn to make anti-racism a daily practice!
