Join us on Tuesday, February 22nd at 6pm as we continue Part 3 of Stop LAPD Spying Coalition’s online series of community conversations for collective learning, analysis, sharing, and building on our report Automating Banishment: The Surveillance and Policing of Looted Land. Two weeks ago, we began our discussion of Part 3, in which we discussed the linkages between real estate development, capitalist crisis, and data-driven policing and how they rely on criminal and property laws to further the ongoing settler-colonial project through violent gentrification. We looked at specific instances of corporate takeover of residential housing stock in poor and Black neighborhoods through the use of CNAP (Citywide Nuisance Abatement Program) and data-driven policing’s LASER zones. This week we focus on Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and their targeting of Black neighborhoods for white capital and the expansion of police terror and surveillance. Paul Boden of the Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP) will join us to discuss WRAP’s organizing against BIDs locally and regionally. Join us in conversation and to build power in our fight!
