This past week, on Monday 7/13, we prepared for our press conference on 7/14. We met with folks, went over talking points, and had our coordinating team meeting! On Tuesday, we started the day early with a press conference to address the expiration of LAPD’s partnership with Flock “Safety,” and the Board of Police Commissioners Office of the Inspector General’s recommendations to suspend new ALPR contracts and cameras. We take a moment to celebrate this incredible power that has been built in our fight against Flock’s ALPRs, and we recognize that the fight continues!
The Board approved the OIG’s recommendations for a suspension pending public input, but we know the public has been giving input for months! And we will continue to do so until all ALPR contracts have been shut down. Later that evening, we held our monthly “War on Youth” meeting where we gave updates on our coming youth internship, talking about Flock and its impacts, and planned out / brainstormed games and ways to integrate play into our work!
On Wednesday 7/15, we went to LA CAN’s Human and Civil Rights meeting where we prepared for Art Walk, and we also went to Black Lives Matter’s press conference to fight for Justice for Keith Porter, a beloved family member, son, girl dad, community member, and so much more. Keith Porter was murdered by an off duty ICE agent on New Years Eve, and we continue to demand justice for him.
On Friday 7/17, the Coalition supported LA CAN at their Food and Wellness Marketplace where we ate delicious food, shared produce, listened to music, and had an open mic, haircuts, and more! On Saturday, we had our monthly Youth Day in the Park where we did arts and crafts, and kite flying!
