Join us for an interactive conversation on the city’s efforts to use the George Floyd rebellion to increase LAPD’s resources and surveillance powers. The city already used the rebellion to expand the Community Safety Partnership surveillance program into a full-fledged LAPD bureau. And now, a City Council commissioned report written by a team of five LAPD veterans including three chiefs and two commanding officers are recommending the creation of a new permanent bureau devoted to “public order policing.” We will dissect this proposal in relation to the history of LAPD’s Public Disorder Intelligence Division, which infiltrated political groups and spied on radical movements in the 1970s. And we will discuss what community was really demanding in the George Floyd rebellion.
