LAPD Inspector General to Release 2014 Suspicious Activity Report Audit

The LAPD Office of the Inspector General will be releasing its 2014 audit of the SAR program at the LAPD Police Commission meeting on Tuesday January 27th at 9:30 am.  The race data confirms the inherent racial profiling in the SAR program.  While African Americans make just under 10% of the city’s population, 30% of total SARs, 3 times the percentage of this population group, are opened on African Americans.  The overall race data shows 70% of SARs filed on non-whites.

There is no audit of community impact, cost and outcome of the LAPD SAR program that has been in existence for almost seven years.  As it was evident from the March 2013 audit, racial profiling of African Americans remains disproportionately high.  Furthermore highly speculative concepts such as “behavioral surveillance” and “reasonable indication” remain firmly embedded in this type of policing.  Please stay tuned for the coalition’s response at the commission mtg on Tuesday morning.
